To start with, i’m working on Adobe CS5.5 Suite but if you’re new, and interested in finding out what the heck is Photoshop, you can download a 30 day Photoshop CS6 trial right here. I’m no genie, i think that Photoshop does not need a lot of brains, just a lot of time and curiosity, will do. So let’s start with a quick edit pack 😉
BRIGHTNESS & CONTRAST
That’s the first and maybe on of most common tools. It’s the one that brings a bit of depth to your image. My advise to you is the one that is for everything: don’t add too much of everything. Your aim is to make everything look realistic, so don’t over do it! Just a bit of brightness and a little contrast – trust me will do the work.
Find it: Image > Adjustments > Brightness / Contrast… [No Shortcut]
Curves is similar to brightness but adds your image a more natural light. I think it can actually bring the perfect light you need when you can’t succeed it with your camera. You don’t want to over do it with curves because the outcome might not look realistic. To achieve naturally, you can try to set input from 100 to 125 and see what suits you.
Find it: Image > Adjustments > Curves… [ Shortcut on Mac: ⌘M on Windows: Ctrl + M ]
Vibrance is perfect to bring out the hidden color in your photo. To be honest, you can do too much, only if you set the bar to the limit. There were times that a picture i edited just needed too much color. But i believe that even just 50% plus Vibrance will do a great difference and will bring everything back to life! With vibrance comes Saturation, which i hardly ever use, it creates a harsher effect with color.
Find it: Image > Adjustments > Vibrance… [ No Shortcut ]
SHADOWS & HIGHLIGHTS
Shadows & Highlights “will bring light were the shadow is!” Which is really effective on some dark images. Once you open it, it will set the amount to 35% by default, but i usually set it to 20% – i like a bit of darkness in my photos, you always need a contrast.
Find it: Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights [ No Shortcut ]
Sharpen is exactly what it says, and it’s one of my favorite tools! Honestly i couldn’t live with out! It will make your images pop out and very realistic. There are different types of Sharpen in the menu. You’ll find [Sharpen / Sharpen Edges / Sharpen More / Smart Sharpen ] but what you need, depends on your image quality. A small one will do great with a simple Sharpen but a big quality will need a Sharpen More and sometimes more than once! You can experiment to find which one suits you.
Find it: Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen / Sharpen Edges / Sharpen More / Smart Sharpen / Unsharpen Mask

Having wore too many colors this summer (seriously it was something like a color frenzy) my soul craves for a dramatic back to basics. Maybe it’s the moody weather, or because it’s getting colder or even i’m starting to figuring my self out; either way, i just want more black & white, pastels, jeans, browns,… Read more »
