One of the most frequent questions around here, is about my mockups. I really thought that mockups was an easy thing, something everyone could do and know but turns out it’s not. And you guys, have been missing so much!
It’s really the best way to present your final work, and most of the times it’s a way for me to show my clients that concept and vision i have behind the brand identity. It’s a totally different thing to put a logo on a white background and to have the logo on a piece of paper. That’s also the reason why i’m always printing the logos i design. You can judge them so much easier when they’re seen in real life.
To start with, where you find these mockups. Depending what you’re looking for, there are tons of mockups in tons of places. From tshirt mockups, cups, packaging, stationary, posters, iPads you name it!

where to find them

DeviantArt  DA, was really the very first social media / community i started on. At that time i didn’t have a blog, twitter, Facebook page and Instagram and Pinterest didn’t exist. I was inspired by all the amazing designers and my goal was get a Daily Deviation. Once i achieved that i started my blog. Ever since, i keep coming back to find brushes, mockups, wallpapers and mac icons. Although there’s a lot of unfiltered crap (sorry people!) you can find some gems if you search a little deeper.
Graphic River It’s the place i go when i’m looking for something more than just a mockup. You can find from water bottles, to effects, to even easter eggs (?! for real)  The prices vary, but i think it’s always a small price to pay since you can use it over and over again.
Pixeden This one’s my favourite. Everything is done with so much detail, and always giving you many options. Some of the mockups are for free and with some you have to have a premium account. It’s like 10$ a month, worthing every cent of it!
Graphic Burger Can i have everything for freeee? Yes you can! I know, mind blowing right? It’s the best place to get started, and one of the best quality mockups to be found! I mean look at the extent of detail and amount of things in this one!
Creative Market I’ve used CM only once, and it’s my least favourite only because it works with credits. AH! Who works with credits these days people? You can dig up one or two good ones here.
Behance I have only just recently discovered that there are mockups on Bechance! And boy, some of the best ones can be found here. Again, for some you have to pay, for others you don’t, depending on the designer. But most of the times they’re worth it.

how to use them

You gotta have Photoshop. Some are more easy to edit than others, and some have more options and capability than others as well. But with all, you’ll see this little icon, that will tell you to place your image here or something like that. Once you double click on it, a second window will open and you’ll be able to place your image there. Save, close the window and go back to your mockup. Voila! It’s magic

create them yourself

If you’re up for some challenge and your photoshop skills allow it, you can always work on some mockups yourself. I’ve been working more and more on those, but of course starting from simple ones, like scanning envelopes, paper and then processing them on photoshop. Adding shadows, editing, changing colours, creating business cards.
It’s a bit more effort, but some times it ends up looking more realistic and not only. You really get the proud feeling that you’ve done them yourself.
Just because there are so many out there, and i bet you’ll get super excited at first, i would suggest to do some research. I’ve categorised pretty much all my mockups and have kept only the very best ones that i found along the way. It really makes it easier to pick one and work with it. When you’re not the best at photographing your work, or want to make a presentation concept for your clients, these are definitely the way to go!

Starting this year with rebrands, i found myself working on about 6 at the same time. It’s not something new to me, as i love challenging myself and working under pressure. Starting this year with rebrands, i found myself working on about 6 at the same time. It’s not something new to me, as i love challenging myself and working under pressure. As i’ve mentioned before, multitasking makes me more focused and creative. Kinda odd i know, but whatever works  best right?
So i had to come up with an idea on how to manage all the projects, and get into each brand’s mood, keeping track the brand’s plan, process, key words, style and all the little details.
As if i was looking for an excuse, i got myself a lovely paperblanks journal (i know i’m super traditional in that way).
The two first pages are blank, to write the project’s titles and page numbers and on the fourth i started writing down everything for my first project. Turns out, this is a pretty magnificent system for those who work on a lot of things at the same time! Here’s how my spreads look like now:

Left Page
Project’s Title
What we’re working on (business cards/logo/letterheads etc)
A few notes from the client’s questionnaire
Key words from the moodboard
Project’s plan (ex. How the logo will be designed)

Right Side

Printing images and recreating the moodboard
Writing key words and taking notes on each image
Slowly, adding images from the project’s process
(helps you to visualise the final concept)

I think you get the idea! It’s so much better than having pieces of paper here and there, or searching older emails to see what you said with your clients. Just write everything down, and have a visual “journal” of the project’s process. Plus it’s super creative and fun!
And of course, definitely helps you manage your time. Working on about 20 different things at the moment, it really keeps my head in its place. There are quite a few other things that i’ve figured out that help me freelancing and i’ll be sharing them on upcoming TFL posts.
moodboards are from existing, new projects

One of the most amazing things around this community, is just how many inspiring and creative people are out there. I’ve been asked a lot where i get my inspiration from, and although it is from small daily things, to big breathtaking moments, i’ve never really got the chance to share the people i look up to. The people who got me started five years ago, who inspire me today.
Back when i was taking my first steps, it was all about finding virtual mentors. It’s really awesome to have someone to look up to and learn from. Not that i got to actual talk to someone, as i was super shy. One thing i learned though is that you should never let your awe communicating with people that inspire you. Be confident.
Anyways, i wanted to take the time today and make a list with my virtual mentors. Because they’re awesome, and deserve a shout out!
PHOTOGRAPHY / INSTAGRAM
these people blow my mind when it comes to capturing the beautiful things in this world. And when i find myself uninspired to post on instgram, they definitely make me go out and chase moments with my camera.
Ravivora Ravi’s feed, feels like a fairytale. Plus i’ve been doing the #dotheravivora on every picture i’m at.
Local_Milk Beth, has the most honest feed. She really captures those small moments in her life, and it just really looks magical.
Melissa Sonico Her style, amazeballs.
Olivia Thebaut Makes me wanna dive into her feed and live her beautiful life.
Emilie Ristevski Got no idea how she does that, but there’s just so much beauty, detail and crispness on her images.
DESIGNERS
Julia Kostreva Most awesome and inspiring designer i’ve ever known.
Amanda Jane Jones The one who gives me that thirst for a bit of modern vintage in my style.
Breanna Rose Bri, was the one that i admired behind my tiny computer when i was trying to figure out what to do with myself. Loved her ever since i saw her beautiful logos.
Cassie of Veda House, always blows my mind. The cleanliness, the texture, love it all.
ILLUSTRATORS / LETTERERS
Asia Pietrzyk She gives me the inspiration to ditch that black and white and minimal! Obviously a major inspiration on my designs, i love the quirkiness and simplicity in her style. Simply makes me happy.
Soleil Ignacio I’ve been lucky to know Soleil for some time now, and she never stops to amaze me with her personal style. There’s no way you wouldn’t recognise here beautiful illustrations.
Ricardo Gonzalez I wanna be him when i grow up. No words, this guy, is out this world. Inspires me to letter more carefully, and really teach my hand to be stable. Plus he loves gold as much as i do!
BLOGGERS
Madelynn Furlong This girl has it all. Incredibly beautiful, amazing style, and super talented.
Kaitlyn Ham It’s not the first time i’m mentioning her here. But come on, she’s simply the best, the quality of the photography, the style, i can scroll her blog forever.
Zanita Her style, really fascinates me! Although i’m a bit more minimal, she’s just such an awesome gal and i simply can’t get enough of her.

Since reading best app articles are my favourites, i thought of making a second part of the apps i shared last year, since technology literally saves my daily life. From work to life, got my iPhone on my hand 24/7. I can hardly remember how life was before the era of the apps. Do you? I bet some of you out there still do everything with the old traditional way, but come on, i’m sure we all need some help from times to times right?
I love having my iPhone nice and tidy, with all the apps in just two pages. On the first, all the essentials and on the second, the ones use less often.
To start with daily life, i have to tell you about just how amazing my alarm is! I’m using Sleep Cycle that tracks how i slept at night, asks my mood in the morning, checks my heart rate, has a smart snooze and best of all, has the most amazing alarm tons. Ever since i remember myself, i’ve been waking up angry (just cause) until i used SC for the first night, and almost woke up singing lol. But no, for reals, it’s that good.

When it comes to financial, i’ve downloaded quite a lot of “wallets” before, and had to stop at tinyWallet. Found it very easy to write every payment, expense, bills and you can see every month statistics, income etc. Pretty handy i say! And right next to it, i have the passible to keep my passwords and cards. It’s pretty and you can use your Touch ID (i use mine everywhere i can, makes me feel like a secret agent)

Same old same old, i love IF (aka IFTTT, thank God they changed that name). Automatically sharing my instagram posts to Facebook and Twitter. And God knows what else you can have that app do!  (Include sending notifications to your iPhone a day before if it’s going to rain). Solar, let’s me know the weather like, literally every minute. And it’s so good, that i’ve became the family’s meteorologist. And as i tend to gather all pictures in my hard drive and forget them for like… ever, i’ve turned into a obsessive memory printer Printic.

When i’m on the go, there are quite a few apps that i find really helpful. myPantone although it’s not 100% accurate, it’s really handy when it comes to pick digitally colours and create colour palettes. I can spend hours creating palettes just for fun. Paper is pretty handy when it comes to sketching ideas when i don’t have a notepad with me, or actually illustrating on the go. And, definitely one of the prettiest designed apps i’ve ever seen. I’f you’re into digital drawing, you might consider getting Pencil for Paper – most brilliant idea ever!!

We’ve had an iPad in the family for quite some time, but unofficially, i’d say it was Theo’s. Now that Theo got a new iPhone, and no longer needs the iPad, i became its happy owner. The very first thing i did, was installing Bloglovin. The past few months i’ve been horribly failing at keeping up with all the blogs i follow. Somehow Feedly wasn’t working for me anymore, it turned out to be very stressful, and Bloglovin website wasn’t as easy for me. Turns out, Bloglovin on iPad is like reading a magazine, so hells yeah, i’m back at spamming you with comments!

Finally, if you’re a type freak like me, FontBook and What the Font (locating a font just from an image) are must haves. Let’s not forget Dropbox, which i may use more than anything, with my clients, with my images and files.

Well that was one long post! Feel free to share your favourite apps, i’m always trying to find some good ones, so any suggestions will be more than welcome!

The past week and last three days have been a great learning experience for me. I’ve written about comfort zones again in a previous tfl in general, but what about projects that are completely our of your league?
I bet some of you have experienced being proposed a dream job or project in which you lacked knowledge or experience. Or simply, you’re just simply starting from scratch. That’s pretty much how i started freelancing. Everything was so new to me,  and i was experimenting, discovering, learning all from scratch. Ever since, i learnt that you never stop learning, and once you get the opportunity, don’t be afraid or disappointed, just grab it and you’ll figure it out along the way.
And trust me, not everyone was born with the knowledge or experience. It all begins with first step out of your comfort zone and simply being determined. And a few more things
Don’t be afraid be ask questions or for help
Do your research, emails and google will be your best friend
Know your limits, know when research is not enough and experience needs a long way to go.
Don’t let anyone question your opinion, but don’t act like a know it all either
Be honest, willing and determined

I bet you all have some interesting story to share with a client who was rude, or demanding, or having a bad behaviour overall. Thankfully i’ve been lucky to have just a few of those. A good 99% of the people i’ve worked with are pure angels. But how about the rest 1%? Hope you’re… Read more »

I bet you all have some interesting story to share with a client who was rude, or demanding, or having a bad behaviour overall. Thankfully i’ve been lucky to have just a few of those. A good 99% of the people i’ve worked with are pure angels.
But how about the rest 1%? Hope you’re not sick of me going on and on about how the world would be a better place if we were all kind to each other. It’s so easy to loose yourself in an argument or get carried away. In the end, i don’t think anyone feels better or justified. On the contrary whenever i’ve lost my temper, had made me feel really bad and unprofessional, even when you have to deal with the worst behaviour.
Kill them with kindness, even if they don’t deserve it, and you’ll be always the one to have peaceful relationships.

As you already know, i’ll be speaking at the Hive Conference in Berlin in April, and this whole week (and the next to follow) i’ve been working on my subject. I’ll be talking about self branding, and some other interesting stuff, and writing everything down, has helped me to see everything so much clearer, with a whole different perspective once again.
I’ve already talked about passion, and how it gets you everywhere, anywhere you want to, but there are so many other things that make your life, your self, your brand successful. Strength comes from within. No matter how awesome your brand is, no matter how you go by the book, unless you’re driven, motivated, passionate, nothing will work.
The past years, blogging, social networking, the whole competition has brought a whole different self in me. A side that i’m really glad that i have. Being determined on anything i do, makes my heart so much lighter. Having a purpose, and goal, setting eyes on it and go. That’s just it, so easy.
