There is always a day in my month that i completely break. I don’t think it’s healthy, but can i do? Us, creative minds we always push ourselves to the limits. That’s when creativity starts. If you don’t break, how do you reset? 7 is my number, and by accident, i’m writing my most honest post.
Even though 90% of the times i’m a positive thinker, on that day i wake up feeling miserable. Like, however hard i try there is always someone working harder. Whatever i do, is not that good, i am not that good. Like i’m drained out of my creativity and whatever i touch turns into *your imagination here*. No that day, is not the day i get my period, i know you would have thought that. But you can call it a designer’s period honestly. Cos that’s what it is.
Those days usually come when i push myself. And oh boy, i do that a lot! I know i’m the one writing about taking breaks and getting rest, buy we all know that a lot of times, you just can’t afford 15 minutes. Although each day i say how blessed i am to be doing what i love, i find myself saying a lot as well “Will i ever wake up to a day, that i won’t have to do anything at all?” Yes, sometimes it does get overwhelming. When you work a lot, you get frustrated, and when you get frustrated you wish you had time to get everything done. And when you realise you don’t, that’s when you get that stupid designer’s period.
So you guessed correctly. I got mine yesterday, and put a lot of thought on why / how this is working and what helps me pass it. What i realised, is that the times i hit rock bottom, i get back even stronger. These are the times i’m highly creative. We always put on a face, how strong / confident / awesome we are, but when we’re breaking down, it kinda feels ..liberating!

Cheer up! You’re unique

When breaking down, because you feel that others are better than you. They’re not. They’re different. They’re unique, just like you are.
Get those feelings out
Oh man, i’m an easy crier. Not admitting that you feel miserable, won’t make that feeling go away. Giving in, and getting it out, that’s when get to realise more about yourself.
Take a nap and drink chocolate
Hahh well, that always seems to be my solution! Replace chocolate, with whatever comforts you. But have in mind that “Molecules found in chocolate, is similar to a substance called valproic acid. Valproic acid is a chemical used in mood-stablising drugs. It’s used to help ‘level out’ the moods of people who suffer with emotional ups and downs and for bi-polar disorder”
Someone will remind you how awesome you are
My hubs is the man. He always knows when i have those days, and he knows how to make me feel better. It could be your friend, sister etc. Things that you already know but forget, you need to hear them.

People have been asking me this a lot lately, so i decided to share my side of the story on the freelance life. Most of you already probably have a job and your question is when it’s the right time to go freelance. I was really lucky at this point, since i was already unemployed (because of the surgery 3 years ago) and had to sit in the house doing nothing. Instead, i tried to work something out. And that’s how i started. I was relying on zero income, so whatever was better than nothing.
I can only imagine how terrifying it is, to be in the middle, trying to get independent and chase your dream. But how stressful it is also! I don’t know if freelancers say that, but unless you are somehow famous the road will be still bumpy. If you read someone saying how awesome, and easy it is, oh boy you have no idea! I know this from first hand, since hubby and i are both freelancers, and the most stressful thing about freelance is that your work is never steady and safe. You have to be super organised with your income and know how to save money to avoid surprises.
As a start, i wouldn’t advice you to take drastic actions. Don’t just wake up one day and say, “ah today feels like a good day to go freelance!” Trust me, in this case, being adventurous, won’t do you any good. Take your time, to prepare the ground. It might even take a year, but you do have to have a base. As i always say (man, this should be my motto) put yourself out there! I’m not super rich or famous, but that rule has definitely showed me (and still does) a lot of progress.
Going freelance means you need to know people, and people have to see you and your work. So scratch off being shy from your to do list. Firstly and most important, is having an online portfolio, and in my opinion a blog wouldn’t hurt either. Don’t expect people to discover you, but don’t become a spammer either. Get friendly, get to know people that interest and inspire you. Get out of your shell. Share your work regularly.
You will know it’s time, when you will feel comfortable, confident and probably won’t have time for your day job. Trust me, it will always be a risk, but what’s a life with not some risk? The more work you do, the more you share, the more people will see you. And lastly, don’t sweat, create. Between being stressed about getting more projects and paying the bills it’s easy to loose yourself. Never forget why you do what you do. Being freelance for me, is probably the most decision i could probably ever do.

I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday! This week has been simply crazy. Between hospital and working from home, and so many new projects coming in, if i wasn’t that organized i’d probably would have lost it by now! hah thankfully good organization, leaves you some time to rest and clear your mind.

But what if you don’t have that? Have you ever got in the position when you have to create / work / design and you’re simply stuck? I’m sure you have. I know i have! And oh boy how much i cried that day 🙂 When you have deadlines, the pressure is definitely big, and getting stuck is really not making it any easier. What i did, was taking a moment, and thinking what works for me, so that won’t happen again. So here goes my list, hope you find it helpful.
Take a break. Seriously, i know it can get frustrating but by pushing yourself won’t work. Taking some time off, even a half an hour, will do its magic. Drinking a hot chocolate always works for me (a cold one in the summer). Don’t go straight to your phone or ipad. You could try something that would clear your mind.
Give yourself a nap! There are actually some studies, and i’m sure you’ll have noticed it too that the best ideas come in those few seconds before you fall asleep. I even use that when i need some inspiration or new ideas. Don’t sleep for two hours, coz just will make you wake up tired. Try for about 20 minutes. When i sleep for just a little bit i always wake up a new person.
Go outside. Nothing better than the fresh air, some natural light and resting those eyes of yours right? Taking a stroll definitely rests your mind, and will bring some more inspiration. While being out, take a 50% of thinking other stuff than the project.
Take a shower. Feeling clean and fresh is always my solution for everything! I guess it feels that water cleans me from any stress and leaves me brand new. Wearing fresh clothes and smelling like a baby, can give you the brand new start you want to get going on.
Do you have any tips? Feel free to share, and it would be my pleasure to update this post and tag you along

Like said before, September is for new starts. And with that, i made my first big one in the internet world. I switched from Safari to Chrome! hah i know it sounds silly, but i’ve been into Safari for a very long time, and always loved it. I did have one issue thought; i’ve had Snow Lion ever since i got my mac and as a result, i couldn’t update Safari. In short words, it didn’t work properly. I’m not very fond of google, but i do like enjoying the privileges of the apps you can have into your browser with Chrome.
Taking a day to organize everything neatly, made me understand how important these little things are in the freelance life. They make tasks easier and i just can’t get enough talking about apps, mac and softwares. I guess it’s us designers!
Ok, so here are my tools of trade. What i’m currently using and totally loving!
I’m still a Safari person, and will be again,  as soon as Maverick is out but can’t deny that Chrome has been really fun with all these apps. Browsing Pinterst and Twitter has never been easier. It’s like everything’s in one place. Plus there’s Wunderlist.
Even though i really like writing everything down in my organizer, there are some tasks, that i need to see every day, and honestly, it gets boring to write them again and again, or move the post it from page to page. And then came wunderlist. You can install an app in Chrome, and write your tasks anytime you want. Plus, it syncs and you can have them on your iPad, iPhone. The best feature i really enjoy, is that you can actually Pin pages, or videos, or texts from the internet into your Wunderlist folders! Trust me, it definitely helps me stay more organized!
Well who doesn’t know dropbox right? I’m using it, 100% every day. It’s been definitely the best way to share files with my clients. Esp when in freelance and working from distance, you have to have a way to transfer files with an easy way.
This is really cool. Esp for those who work with type, it’s definitely hand solving! The idea is, that say you see a font that you like somewhere while walking around. You take a picture, and it recognizes the font! Pretty nice?
By far my favorite! It’s like getting a new toy for Christmas! The new Adobe CC has some really cool features, and new programs like Muse, plus it looks awesome.
What are your favorite tools, that really solve your hands?

Not just a long ago, i would be the least person to talk about motivation. I was born to be bored and unmotivated. True story, ever since i remember myself, i would have all these dreams in my head but always too lazy to pursue them. I always said to myself, “tomorrow’s a good day”… Read more »

Not just a long ago, i would be the least person to talk about motivation. I was born to be bored and unmotivated. True story, ever since i remember myself, i would have all these dreams in my head but always too lazy to pursue them. I always said to myself, “tomorrow’s a good day” or “i have time” to feel better for being bored today. But you know, with so many dreams and goals we have, time will be never enough, and thankfully i realized that early.
To start with, and go easy on you, i don’ think people can change. They can improve. Take me for example; i’m still that lazy girl who die to be sitting on the couch and doing nothing. But saying that, i just realize. I haven’t got to do that for over a year now. I always find myself busy, always working on something, everyday, moving forward. And that’s because, i found a reason.
Look up to great people. That’s how it all started for me. Right after my surgery, 3 years ago, i was stuck at home feeling sorry for myself, how i had no purpose and no goals. I would sit all day and feeling jealous of all the successful bloggers, until i realized, that they weren’t born successful. They evolved, and evolved by going out there and doing something. Looking up to people who made it, still keeps my eyes on target. If they could do it, i can do it.
Sometimes you need a kick. Being busy, is more a routine for me now, but every now and then when get off truck, i really need to kick myself in the butt. If you can’t keep yourself going, no one will. Most of the times it’s really hard to get of that cozy couch, right? But put it that way. Imagine a scale. On one side, the feeling at the end of the day when you haven’t succeeded at anything, and on the other one, the feeling of achievement. That’s always how it works for me. Having a day on the couch, is having -1 day from your 32.871 important days that went to the trash.
See yourself where you want to be. Take a moment, and visualize yourself having achieved all the things that you dream off. It feels good right? Why delay that feeling? What i hear in my mind a lot lately, is that life is too short. You know how today, in a week will feel like it was just yesterday and so goes on and on. Even if i believe in reincarnation, this life is the one i’m living now. And that’s only it for me as Corina. Why not make the most of it? Why not do all the things i want to do?

Write it down. Writing down always lifts a weight from my mind. Write down all your long-term and short-term goals but really, don’t post it somewhere you can see it all time. Yes, i know, eyes on the goals etc, everybody says that you should have your goals somewhere you can see them. But between you and me, honestly. Don’t you already know them? Doesn’t it stress you to have them there looking at you and waiting for you to fulfill them? What i do, is write them down, and put them in a drawer. That way, i know they are near if me i want to take a peak, and it feels like it’s a small secret, just for me. No one to judge me, or put any pressure on me. I know what i have to do, and i know where my reminder is.

My ambitions so far.
Build a great portfolio as a graphic designer and become a better creator // Evolve my jewelry shop // Finish the book i’ve writing for the past 4 years and of course get published on a British or American publishing company // Exercise on my illustration skills // Do something for the animals. Even if that’s opening a handmade shop with toys, or print shop with cat and dog breeds. Haven’t decided yet // Achieve something on a fashion level // Be featured on a magazine // Live in Scotland

Do you have any ambitions, that you lack of motivation to pursue until now?
