Well, obviously no introductions are needed. We all know the huge impact of social media in our lives and work. Besides getting inspired, staying in touch and being updated, the social media boost bloggers and freelancers. Like i’ve said so many times before, i’m not an expert, nor the queen of social media. The freelance life series, are all about sharing what i see that works for me and maybe might help you out or inspire you.
Instagram is one and maybe the only social media that gives you the freedom of being so creative. Think about what makes you stop and be wowed in an Instagram feed. Firstly, the beautiful quality of pictures. The content, how unique they are. Making the every day life fun, and interesting. Adding perspective. Instagram, can give you that push, to step over and get outside, explore and see beautiful landscapes and things to share with the world. That’s what you want in your feed after all right?
Shoot during the day
That is not entirely necessary but what i’m saying, is that you can use the day or night in your advance. Sunrise, sunset, the perfect day light, or new shots. But by all means, avoid shooting in your house, at night with a flash or your lamp. The quality is terrible, and you can hardly see anything.
That varies from person to person, but my silver lining is one or once in a blue moon two pictures per day. That way you don’t over spam, but keep updating. Just like you would do with your blog. Sometimes i may skip a day (on the worst moments more than that) but i feel that showing your presence and being consistent is everything.
I can’t even start saying how many wonderful people i’ve met through Instagram. The number is insane! Like with all social media, the key is to be social! If you’ve got some nice words to say, don’t keep them for yourself. You’ll be surprised how great is to create an Instagram “family”.
Filters depend on what each person likes. But where i want to focus on, is select two or three that lookalike, to create a harmonic impression on your feed. For example, i like using filters that look natural, and don’t distort the colour of the pictures. I have one that i’m using for bright pictures and one for the dark ones. VSCO
definitely is the best. Just play with them, and see what expresses you.
True to yourself
Pinterest is all about being inspired, right? It’s also the mirror of our style. From the first moment that someone will see your boards, they instantly can tell what you like. That’s how someone knows if your pins are going to be inspiring or not, and if you match they’ll follow you. Picking the right covers, is like creating a whole new mood board to express who you are.
Personally, and i don’t think it’s just me, i like pinning images that are with a beautiful light, lovely photographed, and most of the times vertical. Vertical, just because you can see them better. It’s in our nature to like things with great aesthetics.
I’ve once read in an article, that succesful Pinners are those who have unordinary boards. I don’t know if i fully agree with that. I’d say that i’m more fascinated of boards that have great style, harmony and yes might be more specific than home or wear.
Even if i wanted, i wouldn’t be able to stay away from Pinterest. But what i’ve discovered is that instead of pinning for one hour, once a day, people engage more when a pin for 5 minutes more times within the day. That’s only logical although, because that way your pins get to be on the feed of more people from different places in the world.
Bring something to the table
Being part of the community, means that you too, have to contribute. I don’t mean to go and start looking for new pins, but every once you see something you like, bring it to the table so everyone can see it.
What not a lot of Etsy shop owners think, is that one of the ways to get your shop out there is by getting more social within the community. When i opened my shop, i just had it there, and was advertising it everywhere besides Etsy. But slowly, i started getting more interested in other shops, and discovering how wonderful they are. Once again, if you see a treasury list that you admire, don’t keep it to yourself, let the people know!
The first hello on your landing shop is the critical second when someone will decide wether they like your shop or not. I’ve seen that on myself. I might have seen a shop that i’m not interested in their product, but because they have presented it so beautifully, i cannot resist and add them to my favourites. Not giving your product justice is the worse you can do. Try getting some pictures with nature light, a backdrop, and a theme.
With nice photographed products, more people will add you to their treasury lists, and more are the odds to get on the first page. I’m sure you’ve noticed that the front page, always has the loveliest photographed products.
I couldn’t be more obsessed with creating treasury lists. It’s like making small mood boards, AND getting to discover the real beauty within Etsy. All those undiscovered shops, the successful ones and be motivated. Once you create one, don’t forget to message the listing owners with the treasury link. That way, you’re polite and you invite them to see who you are.
One of the ways for people to meet your product is having giveaways. Everybody loves winning something, and at the same time you get them to see your shop and if they want, like it even.
