There must so many advice posts out there, on how to take beautiful pictures, tips, do’s and don’ts but i’ve never came across to one that spilled any secrets on what to do to look good on pictures. Ok, now the disclaimer, i am no model and we all know that! And more than all, i’m not a professional photographer, but i did receive a few emails on my Jewelry Lookbook
asking for some tips. And trust me, no one knows better than me how to look like a troll in front of the camera. In fact each time i had to ask my hubby take pictures of myself i would be so nervous because i knew that we had to take hundreds so i could find just one that would accidentally look good.
Something happened, in the blue wall photoshoot last week (the one i use a profile picture now) and everything fell into place. So since i received those emails and since i did see a change, i thought to share a few tips, that have helped me look better in front of the camera. Hope you find them helpful!
Feel good about how you look
Sometimes, when i feel a bit depressed or just simply “down” i will put on my make up even if i’m alone in the house, and not planning to get out. I will wear an outfit that makes me feel cozy and put take a shower so my hair and my skin will smell nice.
Yes people say that you don’t have to put on your make up, or look on the outside to feel good but the inside is what matters. And no i don’t walk around with my make up all day. Only a couple of times during the week. But what happens when you don’t feel that good on the inside? Don’t you deserve a boost?
I usually have two make up routines i follow. In the first one, i go for the eyes. I will put on some light beige and a bit brown on the outside corners, that i know that makes the blue eyes pop. Or i will just put on only the light beige on the eyes and will play with some bright color on the lips which i really love. In real life, i will rarely wear this make up since it looks too much, and i’m a natural gal, but in pictures, i barely look like i have makeup on, and the eyes or lips just pop!
Wearing an outfit that you know you love and makes you comfortable, will help you with your confidence, and don’t be afraid to mix bright colors and patterns, it will only make your pictures look more interesting! And of course, take a shower 🙂 Nothing’s better than natural looking flowy hair, that look healthy.
Don’t forget that you are a person
Well, i’m just being ironic. I don’t know if it’s just me, but since i’m not a born model, i would freeze and not knowing what to do in front of the camera i would look super uncomfortable and awkward in the pictures. Yes, like a robot i would pose and change poses and having that fake smile on my face. Not good. At all.
Since we did step 1, and you already look really awesome, you just need to finally feel comfortable. Most of the times, we feel shy, of our photographer or if you are shooting outside (which probably you are) the people crossing by and wondering if you are crazy or super famous. It took me more than two years to finally not feeling in front of my husband embarrassed. And most of all, people LOOKING!
The key is to shut down everyone, and just do my thing. Keep it flowing, don’t just strike poses – for me at least it doesn’t work. Be natural, brush your hair, walk, jump, or put your back on the wall like you would normally do if you were waiting for a friend. Forget about the camera completely and act natural.
Use your hands! That’s what you do in your real life. When you are walking, talking, eating, speaking. And when taking pictures we completely forget about it. Play with you hair, touch your hips, raise them up with happiness! If something doesn’t look good, have your photographer tell you, and you can immediately switch it. I for example, have a bad habit sticking my right foot, and it looks really silly. But my hubby reminds it to me and i put that foot in its place right away.
Ok, i’ve seen so many bloggers that take pictures and never smile. That’s such a shame! Smiling just brightens up your blog and people seeing you of course! Don’t you want to make someone’s day with your smile?
It might be difficult in the beginning, because well, what’s to laugh about? You’re in the middle of the street, people watch you, and there’s a camera following you. I used to fake a smile and it would look really silly, not attractive at all. You know the difference between a real smile and a fake one? The eyes smile as well with you. My husband noticed that, since he knows my real smile and he would start making jokes, and sometimes dirty ones, which of course made me blush and giggle even more! I’m not saying that you should have someone tell you dirty jokes, but find something that works for you!
I understood that what made me smile, is a happy thought. And that made my smile genuine. It doesn’t matter what’s happening on the outside, but what’s happening in your mind. Remember how patronuses work in Harry Potter? Well something like that 🙂
Oh, and if you’re shy about your not so perfectly white teeth. Well have you heard of photoshop? The best whitening solution ever. You may need to google dodge tool
Know your angles
That’s the only step that needs just a bit of work. Unless you are Rosie Huntington who looks perfect under a microscope and you’re just an immortal like i am, you may know that you have some flaws going on there, and they don’t always compliment you. I’m fine with that. For example i know that i have a big nose, and that my face is huuuge and i love myself. But i know that if a take the wrong angle picture, i look like a totally different person.
The best thing you have to do, is the one you’ve already probably heard on America’s Next Top Model, which i know you are watching, cos i am! Stand in front of a mirror an practice! Turn your head around around and on both sides, and see on which one you look better. You can even fake a smile, and make a natural one to see the difference. I think sometimes by nature when we have our pictures taken we tilt our head down. So i always remind to raise it up just an inch. That way your face doesn’t deform.
You will see mostly the difference after a few pictures. A test shoot if this is your first time, my do the job. Try taking pictures of every angle of your face to see which one you like better.
Find the perfect time and place
Now that you worked on how to look stunning, next stop is where and when. The where is basically according to what you like. Normally, i just prefer colorful walls! You may see that i’m just obsessed with them. Or the nature, flowers, or just simply some greenery on the background. You could have any backdrop you want. What i’m not really fond of is taking pictures with a really busy backdrop. Like a street where you can see other people on the background. I feel like it takes the artist part of it. If you’re doing a style shoot, well, that’s the perfect for you then!
Each time (and weather) gives your photo shoot a different style and effect the color that it will have. It’s like a natural way of filtering your pictures, plus each of them has a different effect on your face. For example, when shooting on a sunny day in the noon, the sun and its light is very strong and will create harsh shadows on your face and around you. My trick to that time and that light, is to take advantage of my surroundings and play with shadows. Like a tree and the shadows that it creates. It’s the perfect time to create something interesting.
My mostly favorite, and the ones that are going to look helpful to you are when it’s cloudy or on a sunny day in a shadow. Or somewhere around 7 am (the time i had my Lookbook Photoshoot) The light is very soft and everything just look perfect. The golden hour is very artistic as well. Playing with the light is a very fave and looks magical in pictures.
Camera & Position
Ok, so i won’t lie on this one. Yes, all the above tips are working even if you are taking pictures with your iphone, you’ll see an improvement and a more “professional” essence. But! A really good camera, will make your pictures look even more professional. I saw the difference with my previous camera which was a good Nikon, but very simple and it wouldn’t capture everything as it looked. A month ago, dear hubs got me a Sony a35 and yes it does make everything look perfect. Even my from where i stand, look so darn artistic! What i’m saying is, when you take blogging seriously and you are doing style posts, you have to invest on a good camera. It will help you a lot, and will boost you on having more and better material on the blog.
This tip, is for the photographer. If they are not professional, let them know that, they have to keep the lens of the hight of your face. And not tilting them towards you. Having them higher or lower, will deform you, and make whether your face or feet look bigger. And since you don’t want any of that, just make sure they understand that!
Ok, so that was kinda a LOT! It wasn’t my intention to write so much, but i guess i had a lot to share, and after all that’s the idea of blogging, especially when giving tips & advice. So i hope you read the whole thing (no really, do, coz i’ve been writing for the past couple of hours) and find it helpful!
